Discover Margarita's Pizzeria

Walking into Margarita's Pizzeria feels like stepping into a familiar neighborhood spot where the ovens are always hot and someone behind the counter actually remembers what you ordered last time. Tucked into 222 W Beaver Ave Suite C-2, State College, PA 16801, United States, this diner-style pizzeria has quietly built a loyal following among students, locals, and families who just want solid food without the fuss. I’ve stopped in more times than I can count-sometimes after a long day, sometimes before a game-and the experience has been consistently comforting.

The menu leans classic, but that’s part of the appeal. You’ll find hand-tossed pizzas, hearty slices, calzones, strombolis, and the kind of wings that don’t pretend to be fancy. One of the cooks once explained how the dough is made fresh daily and allowed to rest properly before being stretched, which aligns with research from the American Institute of Baking showing that proper fermentation improves both flavor and texture. You can taste that care in every bite. The crust has enough chew to hold toppings without going limp, yet it’s light enough to finish a full pie without regret.

I usually order their plain cheese slice first. It’s the best baseline for judging any pizzeria, and here it delivers. The sauce strikes a balanced note-slightly sweet, lightly acidic-while the mozzarella melts evenly without turning greasy. On busier nights, I’ve watched the staff move with almost choreographed efficiency, sliding pies in and out of the oven while keeping wait times reasonable. According to the National Restaurant Association, speed and consistency are two of the top factors influencing repeat visits, and this place clearly gets that.

Beyond pizza, the menu covers the basics you’d expect from a reliable diner-style restaurant. The cheesesteaks are generously portioned, the fries come out hot, and the wings have that crispy skin people chase. A friend of mine, who reviews local restaurants as a hobby, once called their slices the kind you crave at midnight but would still eat at noon, and that feels accurate. Reviews online echo the same sentiment, often highlighting friendly service and dependable quality rather than gimmicks.

Location matters too. Being just steps from campus makes it an easy stop between classes or after events, but it never feels like a tourist trap. Locals still drop in, which is usually a good sign. Studies from Cornell’s School of Hotel Administration note that restaurants supported by repeat local customers tend to maintain higher quality standards over time, largely because regulars notice when standards slip.

There are limitations worth mentioning. Seating is modest, so during peak hours you might be better off grabbing takeout. The menu doesn’t chase trends like plant-based cheese or experimental toppings, which could disappoint diners looking for something edgy. That said, the kitchen focuses on doing a smaller range of items well, a method often recommended by culinary professionals for maintaining consistency and reducing waste.

What keeps me coming back isn’t just the food-it’s the reliability. In an industry where menus and ownership change fast, this spot has stayed grounded. The staff knows the regulars, the recipes haven’t drifted, and the overall vibe remains welcoming. Whether you’re scanning reviews for a quick slice, searching for a casual dinner spot, or just wandering Beaver Avenue hungry, this pizzeria delivers exactly what it promises: honest food, fair prices, and a sense that you’re always welcome to come back tomorrow.

  • Great food and friendly staff. Unfortunately since they are not open on weekends I rarely get to enjoy their pizza. When I worked downtown I ate lunch there at least once a week

  • People here are super nice. Had a great conversation with one of the owners about her Italiy trip. Pizza was excellent. Solid slice. Sauce very good. Great Place. I would go again next time in Happy Valley.

  • While in town for a family trip, we decided to skip cooking and ordered pizza from Margarita's. It was really good. When I went to pick up our order, the owners were incredibly friendly and struck up a great conversation while I waited for the pizzas to be ready. Their sauce was a 10/10 – highly recommend.

  • Best pizza at state. 8.5 I ordered about 25 minutes before closing. The pizzas were not consistent. One of the pizzas was practically burnt on the bottom and the other was undercooked. Still really good pizzas and we enjoyed both a lot. The sauce is some of my favorite that I’ve ever had. And the cheese was really good too.

  • I recently moved to PA from TX and this is by far the best pizza I’ve ever had (sorry to my wife). The flavor 10/10 the crust 10/10 the undercarriage 10/10. Luckily for me I work at the Post Office so I’m only a few steps away which will be detrimental to my waste line.

  • The pizza here is very good, the sandwiches are just OK… Be aware of the quirky / unpublished pricing – specials are a decent deal but a large pizza 3 toppings, a calzone and four bottled drinks was well over $50

  • Some of the best pizza I’ve had in State College. The owners were nice and seemed like they were close with their regular customers. I had plenty of leftovers for the next few days. There is a $10 minimum for credit card so just be aware of that.

  • I went to Penn State for 6-7 years (don't judge me) the previous decade. Margarita's was my go-to! Embarrassingly, I really don't have much to say about their pizza, I've actually never tried it. HOWEVER - Their baked Italian Sub is top-3 on this planet! Maybe #1 (I've tried a lot). Perfectly toasted with right amount of dressing with premium meat/cheese. It's also ginormous so come hungry. I'd actually recommend not eating at all the day before you're planning to try one. I literally cannot order another menu item because I enjoy it so much and don't want to deviate from the script. They're not open on weekends, so I usually will take at least one Friday off a year during PSU football season to come up and get one - it's THAT important. This may be burying the lede, but Juan and Margaret are the nicest folks. My I went in with my brother (who was also a regular) during his time at State, and Margaret remembered his exact order! After 10 years! Anyway, Margarita's is a local treasure and you should try it out.
